Size guide

Most of what we sell has no size at all. Where it does, it is either free size (garba wear) or bed size (rajai) — and those are two completely different things.

Garba wear: what “free size” means

Our garba pieces are made in one size with an adjustable drawstring waist. They fit a range rather than a fixed measurement, which is how the garment is usually made: for dancing, the flare matters more than a close fit.

On its own, “free size” tells you nothing useful — which is why it is one of the most common reasons a festive garment gets sent back. So we publish the actual figures for each piece on its product page: the waist range the drawstring covers, what the choli fits up to, the skirt length and the hem circumference.

Where a garment has not been measured yet, its product page shows no fit figures at all. We would rather show nothing than a number we have guessed.

How to check it will fit

Compare against a garment you already own and are happy with. That is far more reliable than working from a dress size, because Indian festive sizing and UK sizing do not map onto each other cleanly and the same label means different things from different makers.

  1. Lay a skirt you own flat, without stretching it.
  2. Measure the waist across, then double it.
  3. Measure from the waist seam straight down to the hem.
  4. Compare both against the figures on the product page.

If you are between figures, or the piece has no measurements listed yet, ask us. We will measure the actual garment before it ships to you.

How we measure

Every figure we publish is taken from the garment itself, here in the UK — not from the maker’s specification. Hand-made runs drift from spec, and the spec describes what was ordered rather than what arrived.

Measured flat, garment doubled, in centimetres.
Measurement How it is taken What it tells you
Waist, relaxed Across the waistband, doubled The smallest it sits at
Waist, pulled Drawstring fully extended, doubled The range it will actually cover
Choli bust Armpit to armpit, doubled The largest bust it fits
Length Waist seam straight to hem Where it will fall on you
Flare Hem circumference How it moves when you spin

Rajai: bed size, not body size

A rajai is sized to the bed. Single or double, chosen the way you would choose a duvet — and each product page carries the finished dimensions.

If you are between sizes, size up. A rajai that is slightly generous tucks; one that is slightly mean does not.
